X-rays can be very expensive

Osman, who is an engineer, warns that this isn’t a DIY project for everyone. Most importantly, you need to know that x-rays expose you to radiation. He purchased his equipment, which includes a $ 155 x-ray vacuum tape that he salvaged from a broken dental x-ray machine he recovered from eBay, a roll of lead foil, Geiger counters, and a power supply capable of delivering 60,000 volts.

The total purchase of all equipment is significantly less than the hospital bill. He was even able to create a pretty decent image of a finger bone, which he conveniently had around the house.

Interventional radiologist Dr Michael Cellini said in a reaction video: It’s actually pretty good, I’m quite impressed to be just in your garage. However, Dr Cellini pointed out that the image was of a much lower quality than what you would get in a hospital.

One thing that impressed the radiologist less was when Osman decided to X-ray his own hand. Osman said the radiation he would receive would be even less than a CT scan or a year of life bombarded with background radiation.

Dr Cellini said: “The X-rays produced are not as bad as a scanner, but that doesn’t mean you should. This is probably less than what you would get with an annual background dose of radiation. There is a risk, but not as high as you think.
