Many people have welcomed an Amazon smart device with Alexa or Ring security cameras that incorporate technology to make our lives easier. Since these devices are truly practical, so many of us have not thought twice about how much access we give businesses in our homes and personal lives.

Now, Amazon has announced that millions of Amazon Echo devices and Ring security cameras will have a feature called Sidewalk, which will provide some of your home’s Internet connection to neighbors.

So what does that really mean? First of all, the company has certainly made it difficult to navigate settings to turn this feature off. Many are worried that this will create an intricate network for Amazon to be able to increase monitoring. It’s unclear how secure Sidewalk is, and you should always be tired of sharing your network with people you do not know.

The whole purpose of the Sidewalk is to provide a blanket of connection to the suburbs of America, providing low-bandwidth wireless access that spans half a mile and provides WiFi in areas that were once too expensive to provide connection access. The benefits of this include making it easier to connect devices in places without WiFi.

However, when you choose to connect to such a program, you do not have much control over what data is transferred. Sidewalks could be a bridge to more surveillance and trackers, which is worrying because it is owned by a private company, Amazon, with not much regulation.

Sidewalks connect many users via home networks

Sidewalk uses Bluetooth to connect devices nearby to your home Amazon device, as well as another type of signal that uses the 900 MHz spectrum to connect devices up to half a mile away. Although it can not carry as much data as WiFi, it can signal from all the nearby Amazon devices and combine them together into a “mesh network”.

Sidewalk General Manager Manolo Arana said: “Wi-Fi is mainly limited to your home; it has no reach to go into your backyard and into the neighborhood. Cellular offers long distance connection but it is expensive. Sidewalks split the difference between these two and allow us to put billions of things on the edge of the network. ”

The problem is, Sidewalk authorizes the Amazon device to share a bit of your home’s Internet bandwidth, up to 500 megabytes a month, which is like 150 cell phone pictures. This means that this traffic used by others is paid for by you, not Amazon, and can count towards your ISP’s data ceiling if you have one, so it’s important to keep that in mind.

If you have an Amazon device and want to disable Sidewalk, it is possible but a bit of a long process of digging through several steps of settings. Go to the Alexa app and click on More. Then tap Settings, then Account Settings and finally Amazon Sidewalk. Make sure you have “Enabled” turned off.
