Swiss Guards in Vatican use 3D printed helmets | Gadget theory
The Vatican represents a long tradition of religion and order. Technology isn’t really the first thing that comes to mind when someone mentions the Vatican. However, some changes are implemented in the ancient city in order to stay in tune with the times. At least the Swiss Guards are profiting from the use of modern technology.

The Swiss Guard is known for its vibrant uniforms which it proudly wears as it protects the Vatican as well as the Pope. As is customary with many traditions related to religion, very few changes have been made to these uniforms over the years. Now a few changes have been made to the morion, or the traditional helmet of the Swiss Guard uniform.

The new helmets that will be worn by the Swiss Guard will be 3D printed, offering benefits such as being lighter, cooler and cheaper to manufacture. While the original morion is steeped in years of tradition, the benefits of the new design outweigh those of previous helmets, and the decision was easy to make.

The design of the helmets was based on the original, and each helmet takes 14 hours to print. This is much more efficient than the previous 130 hours it took to make each of the old Morion helmets. Extra care was taken to maintain the dignity of the original, but incorporated improvements such as ventilation which allows the heads of the guards to stay cool in the sun.
The new helmets are slowly being introduced in the Vatican and of the 120 helmets ordered, 98 have already been received. Who knows what is the next step in the technological advances that we will see in the Vatican. What do you predict will be next?
